Student of the Week

Pemi Arowojolu
Pemi Arowojolu
Pemi, 18 from Oakwood, came to Woodhouse from Palmers Green High School and is currently studying politics, geography and sociology. She's just begun her second year as a member of our college council, heading up the social and entertainment committee.

She has been instrumental in organising many events in the college social calendar over the past year - including delivering roses for valentines in aid of the British Heart Foundation, candy canes at Christmas and Halloween horror movie night. She was also part of the talent show organising committee. Following the upcoming elections for new college council members, she will be setting out a new social agenda for the coming year.

In addition she has signed up to be a mentor in her second year and will soon be helping a lower sixth and an upper sixth student with their politics and sociology coursework.

"I was a mentee last year and found it really useful, especially at the beginning of the course. Having someone to breakdown the detail for me was very helpful. Now it's my turn to help."

And helping others is Pemi's main interest, as she has very serious political ambitions.

"A few years ago I went to a summit about the London riots and heard a lot of conflicting and worrying stories. I felt young people were being misrepresented in the media and wanted to give them a louder voice, so I decided to become more involved in local politics. Thats when I found out about the Enfield Youth Parliament."

(The UK Youth Parliament (UKYP) is a youth organisation consisting of democratically elected members aged between 11 and 18. It has 600 members, who are elected to represent the views of young people in their area to government and service providers. Over 500,000 young people vote in the elections each year.)

"I got involved, got campaigning and got myself elected - and have been serving with them for almost two years."

And Pemi's not alone, because three other Woodhouse Students - Eda Cazimoglu, Caitlin Ansah and Yousif Alawoad also serve on EYP.

"I joined the Labour party a short while later and last year was elected Youth Officer by the membership of the Enfield Southgate Labour party. I represent the views of young people in our area, speak up for them at our meetings and keep the party informed of the issues affecting us.

Just before the general election, our constituency candidate was unable to attended a hustings so sent me instead to - debate against the incumbent conservative MP - which was exciting... and I did ok... although we didn't manage to take his seat.

Most recently, I attended the Labour party conference in Brighton as a youth delegate - I went to lots of events about inequality and of course voted on many conference issues. I met Jeremy Corbyn and, along with my friend Eda Cazimoglu, was interviewed for channel 4 news by John Snow, which was exciting. It was great for my family to see me on TV, my parents are very supportive and definitely behind me all the way.

I'm applying to LSE and Warwick to study politics and international relations. Politics take up most of my life but I also want to study law and will probably opt for a law conversion degree and maybe work as a barrister before a career in politics."

And Pemi is not the only one in her family who's driven to succeed...

"All three of my sisters came to Woodhouse. My oldest sister graduated with a first class honours degree from Loughborough University and now works at Accenture - a management consulting company.

My middle two twin sisters are at Warwick University, one has a graduate job at Goldman Sachs the other recently interned at Barclays."

(We may need to dedicated an Alumni page just to the Arowojolu family!)

"I guess I always thought I'd end up at Woodhouse. But after applying I decided that I'd probably go somewhere else - just to to be different. Then I came to introductory afternoon and that swayed me back again, I just loved the place and the people.

Woodhouse has given me such a solid foundation. I've met new people, got used to meeting deadlines and working independently, and grown up. I now feel more confident and ready to go off to university."

And we are confident you will be successful there, and beyond - you've certainly got our vote Pemi!
