Student of the Week

Keziah Doudy-Yepmo
Keziah Doudy-Yepmo
This week we feature Keziah, from Wood Green, who came to us from La Saint Union School and is currently studying geography, Spanish and English literature.

"I've just finished my UCAS application to uni's all over England but I really want to go to Manchester to study geography with an integrated masters in international development.

I like to know why certain countries are more developed than others and why some have been held back, I'm interested in social justice and understanding the global institutions that keep the poor - poor.

I'm particularly interested in Africa. My mum is from Cameroon and my Dad is from Congo and I lived in Cameroon for six months when I was younger and hope to visit Congo sometime too. I visited South Africa a few years ago and was exposed to newer historical stories such as that of apartheid and Nelson Mandela. I saw for myself the difference between rich and poor - even now - and learnt of the long history of racial injustice.

I am currently taking some extracurricular master classes at LSE for politics (which I studied at AS). We're not following any curriculum but it informs my studies in geography and international development. I enjoy debate and learn a lot from it, it makes me question my beliefs and preconceptions.

Before summer, some of our geography class took part in video interviews at the Guardian newspapers offices, about climate change and their 'keep it in the ground' campaign. I talked about about how the people who commit the acts that accelerate climate change are not usually the people that suffer the effects. The film should come out around the time of the UN summit on climate change in November.

This October I took part in a trip to Auschwitz and wrote an article about it on the Woodhouse website. It was a strange experience for me. I've obviously only read about it in history books and seen the black and white photos of the atrocities and inhumanity but when we got there it was a beautiful sunny day in a lovely area of Poland and it was hard to comprehend how such horrible things happened there.

All of these trips, classes and activities tie in with my interest in geopolitics and it's great that I've had the opportunity to do so many interesting things.

Outside of Woodhouse I am one of the leaders in the choir at my church and I love to sing. I help to set up our practice sessions with the singers and instrumentalists and select the music. During events I sometimes act as an ambassador, addressing the congregation.

I have also joined 'Courtyard' a community project to help people who have lost direction and need some help to get their life back on track. The project brings together people who can offer skills like CV writing, interview training or even drama and acting. It's about discussing your stories so far and helping people write the next chapter. I'm assisting with some administration stuff and - being a younger member - I feed back views from the young people we help. It's a pilot scheme at the moment but I'm positive that we can really reach out to people who are marginalised.

Recently I've been involved with a new college poetry group. I think spoken word is a great, new, fresh way of exploring ideas that are sometimes hard to talk about.

When I first came for interview at Woodhouse, I really liked the vibe of the college. Beforehand, I thought it would be a school for 'posh' people but then saw that wasn't the case at all. There is such diversity here, of race, of class, of orientation and everyone accepts you. I feel it prepares you for the real world better than schools that shelter you or have a narrow cross-section of society. You come across all kinds of views, beliefs and opinions, and its a good place to form yourself as a human being.

And... I've just been featured in the new prospectus - for the geography page, which is nice." And what a perfect candidate for our prospectus with those credentials.

Thanks Keziah, for taking such a keen interest in our community, and indeed - our planet! We expect to see you on the world stage of geopolitics in the near future.
