Vietnam veteran John B. Wilson talks cold war realities

Dated: 9 February 2016

Woodhouse was very happy to welcome guest lecturer John B Wilson to our 'Speakers Corner' last week, to talk about the cold war from the perspective of someone who lived through it...
John is a semi-retired social studies teacher at The American School in London, and an academic with a specialist knowledge of east-west relations during the cold war. He was also an officer in the US Navy during the 1960's and served in Vietnam for two tours.
He spoke to an interested group of around 100 students (mostly studying politics and history) about the circumstances that led up to the Vietnam War, the reasons America got it so wrong, and more personally about the terrible way veterans were treated by both 'pro' and anti-war campaigners upon their return.
Students really benefitted in getting first-hand insight into a subject that is part of the history curriculum, and had plenty of questions for John about American foreign policy after WW2 and the mood of the people in the sixties, who were not given all the facts about the escalating Vietnam war.
