Extended Project Qualification
The Extended Project Qualification (EPQ) offers students a unique opportunity to delve into a topic of personal interest, fostering independent research and critical thinking skills. This Level 3 qualification is equivalent to half an A Level and is designed to complement students' academic studies by encouraging them to explore a subject beyond the standard curriculum. Students may choose to produce either a 5,000-6,000-word dissertation or a creative artefact accompanied by a 1,500-3,000-word report.
The EPQ launch assembly takes place in November, after which students can apply to join the programme. Up to 120 students can undertake the EPQ each year, submitting their projects in July of Year 12. Throughout the project, students are supported through lessons with EPQ teachers, trips, a bank of resources, and library support. Students are also encouraged to seek guidance from subject specialists to support their projects. The EPQ cultivates essential skills such as time management, problem-solving, and effective communication, and can strengthen university applications. It is also an effective way to prepare students for university study.
"Completing an Extended Project which is equivalent to half an A level helped me develop my project management and time management skills. Managing time and keeping a detailed activity log is part of the assessment criteria for EPQ and so I needed to use a range of strategies such as prioritising and setting small goals in order to receive high marks."
