Lower Sixth Students Take on Social Action Challenge

Lower Sixth students at Woodhouse College have made a real difference through this year's Social Action programme, working together to raise an incredible £31 451 for charities that are important to them.

Delivered in partnership with Unloc, the project encourages students to become active changemakers by taking their learning beyond the classroom and into the local community. Working in teams of between five and ten, each group chose a charity to support and was challenged to raise a minimum of £200, while also making a meaningful contribution to their chosen cause through social action.

This year, students are supporting a wide variety of charities, reflecting the issues they care about most. These include Cancer Research UK, Great Ormond Street Hospital Charity, Teenage Cancer Trust, British Heart Foundation, Oxfam, Save the Children, UNICEF, Crisis, NSPCC, Macmillan Cancer Support, North London Hospice, YoungMinds, War Child UK, WaterAid, Women’s Aid, Barnardo's, Woodland Trust, and many more.

The programme is about much more than fundraising. Students are encouraged to research the work of their chosen charity, understand the issues it tackles, and think creatively about how they can raise awareness alongside raising money. Every team developed a project plan, setting out their goals, timeline, fundraising activities, and how they will measure the impact of their work.

This year's projects showcase an incredible range of ideas. Students organised sponsored walks, runs and cycling challenges, bake sales, community fairs, talent shows, car washes, quizzes, sporting events, creative workshops, sleep outs and social media campaigns. Many groups also worked directly with their chosen charities and local organisations to maximise the impact of their projects.

Students began planning their projects in May and fundraised throughout June, with Social Action Day taking place on 1 July. At the culmination of the project every group presented their project to their tutor group, sharing what they achieved, the challenges they overcame, and the difference their fundraising has made.
