Assistant Accountant

Salary: £39,535 – £41,672 inclusive per annum, depending on experience
 
We are seeking an Assistant Accountant who is part qualified and has accounts experience. The successful candidate will have good communication and IT skills and be able to work efficiently to deadlines in a busy but friendly team consisting of the Assistant Principal - Finance, an Accountant and a Finance Assistant. The Finance team is responsible for managing the finances of Frontier Learning Trust which includes Woodhouse College and Imperial College London Maths School.
 
This is a permanent, full-time, all-year round position. The full-time hours are 36 hours per week, however requests for part-time hours would be considered.
 
The salary will be in the range of point 20 – 22 on the sixth form college support staff salary scale, currently £36,283 – £38,420, depending on experience, plus £3,252 London Weighting, per annum.

Job Profile
 
The Assistant Accountant will work alongside the Assistant Principal – Finance, the Accountant and Finance Assistant in the Trust’s Finance Team. The Assistant Accountant will report directly to the Assistant Principal, Finance.
 
Job Purpose
 
The post is responsible for assisting the Accountant and the Assistant Principal, Finance with managing the Trust’s finances. The Finance team is responsible for managing the finances of Frontier Learning Trust which includes Woodhouse College and the Imperial College London Mathematics School.
 
The main tasks of the role are:
 
• Prepare bank reconciliations
• Maintaining Student financial transactions records, including dealing with trips and book deposits
• Dealing with banking queries and banking cash and cheques as required
• Dealing with petty cash and foreign currency for trips
• Raising sales invoices as required
• Assisting with input of purchase invoices as required
• Checking weekly bacs run for correct authorisation
• Managing payments made using the trust credit card and reconciling the monthly statements
• Preparing monthly VAT126 claim forms and submitting to HMRC
• Prepare gift aid claims for submission to HMRC
• Maintaining the Fixed Asset Registers and calculating depreciation on a monthly basis
• Reconciling the bursary fund with the bursary team and posting bursary journals as required
• Producing monthly accounts for a subsidiary company that deals with the college lettings
• Producing monthly reconciliations, including for school trips and charity fundraising
• Assisting the Accountant in preparing schedules for the year end audit and as required during the year
• Assisting the Accountant in preparing annual budgets and with ESFA returns
• Providing cover when a member of the team is absent
• Carrying out any other duties as may from time to time be requested by the Assistant Principal, Finance and the senior leadership team.
Essential Requirements
 
• Part qualified recognised accountancy qualification or qualified by experience.
• English and Maths GCSE or equivalent.
• Minimum two years accountancy experience including:
o Reconciliation of bank accounts
o Sales and purchase ledger accounting
o Excellent understanding of double entry bookkeeping
o Experience of purchasing, invoicing, petty cash and other routine financial tasks
o Fixed Asset accounting
o Month end reconciliations.
• Familiarity with banking procedures.
• Experience of using accounting software and spreadsheets.
• Good IT skills including use of Outlook, Excel and Word.
• Good attention to detail and organisation skills.
• Good oral and written communication skills.
• Good interpersonal skills.
• Ability to work to tight deadlines and to work as part of a team.
• Willingness to work flexibly when required.
• Ability to deal tactfully and sympathetically with students, parents and members of the public.
• Understanding of and commitment to equality and diversity in practice.
• Commitment to safeguarding the interests and needs of young people.
 
Desirable Requirements
 
• Experience of working in education or the voluntary sector.
• Knowledge of PSF accounting software and Bookings Plus lettings system.
