Careers Week 23
Dated:
16 March 2023
Last week, the whole of our lower sixth embraced National Careers Week with a full programme of events.
Alumni and Google lawyer -Zaheed Patel
On Monday students attended a talk by Zaheed Patel, a former Woodhouse student who now works as a lawyer at Google.
We hosted the first in a series of careers insight talks on Tuesday where we heard from degree apprentices from The Dyson Institute, law firm Leigh Day and Sky.
Our annual careers fair took place on Wednesday afternoon where students were able to speak with ambassadors from over 40 different organisations, including organisations from business and finance, media, law, publishing, architecture and public services.
Graham Denholm from Doughty Street Chambers
Sarah Clay - tips and tricks from a LinedIn trainer
Many students took part in employability workshops, including LinkedIn training, CV writing and interview practice.
Woodhouse volunteers and examiners helping to deliver final year exams at UCLMS
On Thursday,15 students were selected to invigilate UCL medical student's practical exams at North Middlesex Hospital. This is the first year UCL have used sixth form students and because it's been successful, the idea is going to be rolled out to other university hospitals as a way of sixth form students experiencing first-hand what it's like to be a medical student.
Woodhouse student Ahlam said "I really enjoyed this experience. As an aspiring dentist I was able to appreciate the structure of the exam and how lucky I am to gain insight from something I will also be doing in the future. Not only was I able to help outside the stations, but I also helped senior staff by role-playing as a patient myself. As I was able to experience all components of this exam, I'm sure that I will be more than ready and well-informed once it is my turn to go through the CPSA (formerly OSCEs)."
Fellow student Amee agreed... "Helping with the CPSA exams was extremely insightful as a prospective dentistry student. Initially, I had no idea that these exams existed and I gained a lot of experience watching how they worked. It really opened my eyes to what skills I needed to be a dentist, and I am excited to one day pass these exams myself."
Zoya from Penguin Random House
Finally on Friday we were joined by another alumni, Zoya Ali who currently works at Penguin Random House and ran a workshop with students around different careers in publishing.
Students told us afterwards that it was a "brilliant insight into the publishing industry" and that there were "helpful engaging sessions with enjoyable group work" and a "very high level of expertise." Another added "We didn't realise so much went on behind the scenes when creating a book... it was so interesting and gave us a lot to think about".
