A taste of Cambridge

Dated: 3 March 2020

More of our students continued to explore the Oxbridge route last week when 29 of them took a trip to Cambridge.

Accompanying teacher from Woodhouse, Dr Shah, told us…

“The day was broken down into various activities. There was an introduction to Cambridge University followed by an example of a simulation tutorial. There was then a mock interview task where students worked in pairs and had to imagine they were in a lift with the interviewer for three minutes, and they had to explain why they want to study their chosen course at Cambridge.

We had a lovely sit down lunch where some of our ex-Woodhouse students made the effort to join us. Eron, Sayeed, David and Art are all currently in their first year, three of them studying Natural Sciences and one studying Engineering. It was great to see they are getting on so well.

After lunch we had a tour of Gonville and Caius college given by two students and we were given an opportunity to ask them many questions.”

Woodhouse student Simran said “I found the trip extremely enjoyable overall. It was particularly useful that we were able to get advice on how to apply, as well as the stimulating tasks that were set during the PowerPoint. Getting to hear the experiences of current students was invaluable too.”

Classmate Abigail agreed “I sincerely enjoyed the trip. It was very informative and I made many notes. The atmosphere was welcoming and the tour of the grounds was enjoyable.”

The next day, four of our students: Max, Emily, Emma and Rachel took part in Cambridge Chemistry Race Competition - a new competition for teams of three to five sixth-form students organised by the Department of Chemistry, University of Cambridge. The teams race against each other in solving chemistry problems; who gets the most points within the time limit, wins.

Student Mali also got a lot from the trip “I really enjoyed visiting Cambridge as it gave me a clear indication of what sort of degree I'd like to do in the future. Before, I was hesitant about trying for either Cambridge or Oxford - however the trip made me actually consider applying. I also liked the food :) “
