On the 26 of November a group of students involved in the first year of Careers Academy had the chance to visit a leading insurance company in the city of London. I was lucky enough to be part of this group and would like to share my experience.
We arrived in the morning at 30 Fenchurch Street in the middle of the morning rush of business men and women arriving at their job. Just next door was the new Walkie-Talkie tower and just beyond the building across the street was Lloyd's of London. What a place to be. I walked in to meet up with the group and was wowed by interior of the building. You could all the way up the building to the very top floors and they were all filled with busy business types sitting at their desks.
The time came when we were all escorted to the 9th floor to meet with some of the people working for Royal Sun Alliance, a multinational general insurance company with over 17 million customers. We were all sat around a huge conference table and a member of corporate responsibility gave us a short introduction about RSA and the various things they have insured over the years, among which was the titanic which did not turn out well for them. We then had a chance to chat to some of the people that work there. I went around the room talking to people working in accounts to people working in IT and even law. They all seemed so happy to be working there contrary to the myth that London business is drenched in a coat of lies, misery and cut throat operations. Going around the room I realized that these people really loved their job and loved working in London.
“I absolutely loved the Capital Experience. The amazing opportunity was definitely eye-opening. Interacting with different people was scary at first, but once we got to know them a bit better we had so much fun. The inspirational speakers also made a big impact on myself and others around me. “
