Alumni Gleb talks muons...

Dated: 5 February 2019

On a snowy Friday lunchtime, ex-Woodhouse student, Gleb Lukicov came into college to tell 30 physics students about his Ph.D research.
Gleb is briefly back in London, escaping the far more chilling temperatures of Chicago. He has been living there for a couple of years as part of a UCL group at Fermilab, investigating the properties of a fundamental particle called the muon.
The research could shine light onto unanswered questions in physics such as the imbalance between matter and anti-matter, as well as developing potential uses for muons such as being able to see into sealed containers at customs. A solution to the backstop controversy maybe?
As well as discussing the physics behind his research, Gleb also described his life as an experimental physicist and his journey from Woodhouse to Fermilab, one of the most famous particle accelerators in the world.
