Career Ready 2020

Dated: 31 January 2020

Thursday 16th January 2020 saw the launch of our latest Career Ready programme, now in its 11th year, with an icebreaker event for our 20 new recruits coupled with an award ceremony for our graduating students.

Career Ready is a national charity linking employers with schools and colleges to open up the world of work to young people. Woodhouse runs a successful business academy that is rated in the top ten in the UK, and offer a structured programme of activities that sit alongside college studies. It is delivered by employer volunteers who provide masterclasses, mentoring, workplace visits and internships, from companies like Morgan Stanley, BP and Citi Bank, to help our students compete with the best in the country and give them the confidence, skills and networks to achieve their potential.

The evening, attended by new mentors and parents as well as members of our Career Ready LAB (Local Advisory Board) kicked off with a sad goodbye to one of our longest-serving mentors and board members, Marjorie Bremner, who has generously given countless hours of her time imparting valuable information to many of our students. Student Luana, who was recently mentored by Majorie, spoke of the impact Majorie’s mentoring had on her and said she will never forget Marjorie’s kind words.

Next, a panel of our graduating students and the vice-chair of our board discussed how the program had influenced their lives.

Economics student Derome shared some highlights of his Career Ready journey and offered some advice to the new cohort...

“During the summer I attended an internship at Citibank. I was able to get a certificate whilst I was there for communicational skills as I was able to show the networking skills I developed through attending masterclasses.

My first tip, go to these masterclasses. They may not seem significant now but learning how to make a good CV, structure a good email and give a good elevator pitch are all important skills that can help you greatly in life. For example when getting a job or applying for insight days and internships. I'd also recommend taking advice given seriously and use the helpful resources and mentors effectively. Last year, it was recommended I make a Linkedin account and be active on it, which has helped me to develop my network.

My mentor and other Career Ready staff have also helped me with many of my applications to different programs such as insight days at investment banks like BNP, Pariba and Merrill Lynch, where I met bankers and saw a trading floor for the first time.”

Woodhouse alumna Cansu spoke about the benefits to employers providing summer internships to young people, as her company RJO Brien hosted three of our students.

Rounding off the evening was a graduation ceremony and the student of the year awards, presented by LAB chair Jane Hirst, which this year went to Layomi and Jake.
