Last dance at Woodhouse

Dated: 29 March 2018

On the evening of Wednesday 28th March, Woodhouse A level dancers gave parents, staff and friends an excellent performance of the pieces they’ve been working on this year, in the dance studio at Woodhouse College.

The audience were enthralled by the mix of classical and contemporary styles in what was sadly to be the dance department’s ‘swan song’ for the time being. But that didn’t stop our dancers from giving their all at what was a memorable evening.

Principal John Rubinstein said “It is with a heavy heart that we let dance drift off of the college curriculum, but budget cuts and the small numbers applying for dance have unfortunately rendered it unviable for the time being.

That said, the dancers certainly didn’t let that affect their performance and they were magnificent this evening. I have to give particular mention to the amazing efforts of our dance teacher Haley who has worked tirelessly for the college and is absolutely adored by our students. The show tonight is all credit to her and she will be sorely missed by us at the end of the year.

For such a small class we’ve had really excellent success this year with two dancers getting offers for a prestigious conservatoire, two more studying dance at other universities and another with an Oxbridge offer, outstanding.”

Proud dance teacher Haley Sadler said “I’ll miss the students a lot, I’ve really bonded with them and they have all worked so incredibly hard, harder than any other students I’ve taught.”

There is a glimmer of hope for the future of dance at Woodhouse the Principal explained. “ There’s the possibility of us running a ‘twilight’ A level dance course after college, in conjunction with our partner school The Archer Academy who are keen to offer it to their first cohort of sixth-formers at Woodhouse. Talks are going well and fingers crossed we can offer dance as an additional A level to students next year."
