BME student conference 2017

 

 

On 24th of February a group of Woodhouse students took a trip Trinity College at Cambridge University to the BME student conference 2017.

 

This one-day event invites high-achieving Year 12 students from BME (black and minority ethnic) backgrounds to experience a taste of life at Cambridge. Students who attend the event receive an admissions presentation from the college Admissions Tutor, experience the supervision system which characterises teaching at Cambridge, as well as exploring Trinity College. BME students from across the university are be on hand to answer questions, and share their experiences of studying there.

 

Our students certainly got a lot of food for thought from the day…

 

Yasmeen Abdulrahman said "Before we went, I didn't really know what to expect. I've visited Cambridge University before but I never imagined myself being a student there in the future. However, the BME conference changed my opinion. One thing I found really useful was the talk on personal statements. I didn't really know what was required in a personal statement. However, I made really helpful notes during the talk that was given to us and this made everything much more clearer. Now, I feel much more confident. I also enjoyed the academic sessions that I attended - my favourite one was the Medicine session. It linked to what we were learning in Biology therefore all the notes that I took were relevant to the topic we studied last week. Overall, it was a really enjoyable day and I hope that more opportunities like this will be available in the future."

 

Callum Helcke said "I want to thank Cambridge (and Woodhouse staff) very much for this opportunity. I found the day extremely informative and motivating especially as before this I had little interest in Oxbridge. I have a new found love for the city and the university. The next step is working out what subject I want to do which I feel should come before my university choice."

 

And Sophie Marlow said "The BME conference was an enriching experience and gave me the opportunity to understand day-to-day life at Trinity College, including the Supervision system which is unique to just Oxbridge. A particularly useful element of the day was a student Q&A which allowed me to learn more about the application process by those who have witnessed it first hand."

 

These sort of trips are just one of the many Oxbridge activities we take part in at Woodhouse in our efforts to support our ever increasing number of Oxbridge applicants. This year almost 50 of our students got to the interview stage for an Oxbridge offer and 13 of them were successful.
