Woodhouse Model UN delegates hold sway in Birmingham

Dated: 16 March 2016

Some of our geopolitically aware students took part in Model UN again last week. Our roving reporter and delegate Rabia Bhatti sent us this...

"On the weekend of the 11 - 13 March, our group of sixteen Woodhouse students set off for a Model United Nations conference at Birmingham’s Joseph Chamberlain College.

Our students represented Germany, Russia and India, debating a number of themes. Throughout the weekend, we became more aware of global issues that surround us as well gained an appreciation of the day to day running of the UN itself.

Debates were both heated and fierce, as each delegate’s knowledge was challenged and ideas were scrutinised, putting our months of research to the test. However, we all persevered and fought for our resolutions to be presented at general assembly, Woodhouse got 15 resolutions through to committee stage. Amongst these were issues such as ocean toxicity, the topical nature of Syria and the question of legalising prostitution.

Both Andri Boda and Ben Jones, took on the challenge of confronting all the nations on the General Assembly day on Sunday, as they tried to sway the general assembly with their final resolutions.

Woodhouse students were well placed to gain a number of awards including best resolutions (won by me!), persuasive speaking and of course the most coveted ‘best dressed award’ won by our very own Aidas Zvirblis.

It was a great weekend and we all hope to chair and organise our own bi-annual Model UN in January 2017."
