Woodhouse students put FGM awareness on the agenda

Dated: 16 May 2018

Last term, a small group of upper and lower sixth students volunteered to be part of the first ever awareness raising group at Woodhouse to highlight the taboo subject of Female Genital Mutilation.
The group attended an eight week training course, in their own time, where they learnt about this serious issue and the consequences it has on women and girls both worldwide and here in the UK.
The girls worked closely with the nationwide charity FORWARD and used the £500 budget they were given with great thought.
They ran two lunch time events which included information stalls, a debate about gender issues and consent, and fund raising activities including vagina cupcake designing and selling awareness raising t-shirts and badges that they had designed themselves.
The events were very successful with over 200 students taking part in the activities and asking questions and it was particularly pleasing to see young men taking an interest and taking part too. The group are currently producing an awareness raising video with clips from the events that will be shown in tutorial next term to the whole College, including staff.
Lisa Fry ( Student Progress Manager) who supported the volunteers, said...
"This group were amazing and I am very proud of them all – they were sensitive and thoughtful throughout the training (which they did in their own time!) and were particularly articulate and confident when running the stalls and answering questions from students. Every single student in the awareness group played a key part in the success of the programme. Thanks go particularly to Juriya, Selin, Sunzida, Sawir, Dilbur Radhika and Anita for their enthusiasm and drive in organising the events and Shafiqa and Maya for helping out on the stalls."
